Word Play is the monthly club where we find all kinds of ways to play with stories. This month we’re re-scripting some of our favorite cartoons by cutting out the characters and adding our own captions!

50 States Book Club (Registration required)

Monday, February 17, 6:30 p.m. 

Location: Create & Learn Center

New members are invited to join the 50 States Book Club. Each month, we read a book set in a different state and enjoy a themed treat provided by the Library. This month we will celebrate Black History Month with a discussion of the historical fiction novel The Personal History of Rachel DuPree by Ann Weisgarber. This story follows a former Buffalo Soldier and his wife from Chicago to the South Dakota Badlands where they establish a ranch in 1917.  Ask for a copy of the book at the Adult Services Desk.

A Binge Box is a box full of books hand-selected for you by our librarians, plus treats and small gifts to brighten your day.  You can request a personalized box, or go with this month’s theme: women’s voices.

To get your Binge Box, fill out a paper form (found at the Library) and bring it to the Adult Services Desk, or fill out the online form at cslibrary.org/binge-box.

Each month, our popular book club for adults reads a book set in a different state. This month, we will also be celebrating National Library Week as we discuss The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson, set in Kentucky.  Description: “1936. Tucked deep into the woods of Troublesome Creek, KY, lives blue-skinned Cussy Carter, the last living female of the rare Blue People ancestry. She joins Roosevelt's Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky and becomes a traveling librarian, riding across slippery creek beds and up treacherous mountains on her mule to deliver books and other reading material to the impoverished hill people of Eastern Kentucky.” Ask for a copy of the book at the Adult Services Desk.

In honor of National Library Week, we will explore our love of books by learning a couple of the most basic forms of book binding.  All instructions and materials will be provided by the Library at the time of the class. Our project will be simple enough to finish in one hour and be recreated with household supplies (no fancy machines or tools required). This class will require dexterity to work with small threads and delicate materials.
